Buick . How to Change a Starter on a MaximaThe starter on your Nissan Maxima is responsible for turning an electrical charge from the battery into mechanical energy. The starter turns the flywheel, thus starting the engine. When your Maxima begins to experience prolonged and sluggish starts, then your starter may need to be replaced. If you find yourself stranded with a broken starter, try hitting it lightly with a hammer in order to jostle the starter's gear to engage with the flywheel for one more start. Then replace it as soon as possible. As far as auto repairs go, it's a moderately easy task. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack Jack stands Torque wrench Socket wrench with adapters and sockets Mechanics gloves Replacement starter Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the Maxima's negative battery post, and secure it so it can't come into contact with the battery or metal. 2 Trace the path of the positive battery cable back to the starter. Maxima models from the 1993 to 2003 model years have the starter located underneath the air intake duct and air cleaner housing assembly. Other years may have a different location depending on the design of the engine. 3 Remove any parts that hinder access to the starter. As stated earlier, Maximas manufactured between 1993 and 2003 require the removal of much of the air intake system before you can access the starter. Use a flat-head screwdriver to unscrew the hose clamps on the air intake ductwork and hoses. Remove the air filter housing by unscrewing the bolts on each corner of the housing's lower plenum. 4 Disconnect the solenoid terminal electrical connection from the Maxima's electrical harness. 5 Use a socket wrench to remove the starter motor mounting bolts, and slide the starter out from its connection with the flywheel. 6 Insert the new starter into the same location as the old starter. Use a socket wrench to screw in the starter mounting bolts. Be sure that the mounting bolts are aligned properly and that the starter is resting against the flywheel surface evenly all the way around. If the starter is not properly aligned with the flywheel, then it will not engage, failing to start the engine. Reconnect the solenoid's electrical connection. 7 Reconnect the Maxima's negative battery cable. Turn your Maxima on. If the car does not start properly, then you may not have aligned the starter with the flywheel. If the Maxima does turn on, reassemble the air intake duct and air filter housing. If you removed any other parts, per the model of your Maxima, reconnect them as well. Tips & Warnings Use a torque wrench to remove bolts that are too tight to remove with an ordinary socket wrench. If the starter is located underneath the engine for your Maxima's model, you may need to raise your vehicle with a floor jack and jack stands. ResourcesSamarins: Car No-Start Troubleshooting Guide
Buick . How to Change the Starter on a 1994 Oldsmobile 88 RoyaleThe starter in your 1994 Oldsmobile 88 Royale uses battery voltage and current to rotate the engine when the ignition key is turned to the "Start" position. If a short develops in the starter motor or solenoid, or if the brushes in the motor lose contact, the starter will require replacement. Changing the starter in this car is similar to the procedure for other General Motors front-wheel drive cars and you can usually do it in about an hour. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Floor jack Jack stands Socket set Wrench set Step by Step : 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery using an 8 mm wrench to unscrew the cable bolt. The battery in the 1994 Oldsmobile 88 Royale is located in the passenger-side front of the engine compartment between the radiator and the coolant reservoir. 2 Block the rear wheels using the wheel chocks and position the floor jack under the front of the front sub-frame, under the front of the car behind the front bumper. Apply the parking brake and raise the car with the floor jack until you have room enough to work underneath. Place jack stands under the left and right sides of the sub-frame and lower the car onto the stands to support the weight of the car safely. 3 Remove the plastic inspection cover that surrounds the front of the starter by removing the two 10 mm bolts with a wrench. Remove the support bracket from the back of the starter using a socket, extension bar and ratchet. 4 Remove the two 15 mm starter bolts that attach the starter to the engine block using a 15 mm socket and ratchet and lower the starter down slightly. Remove the 13 mm cable nut and 8 mm starter signal wire nut from the back of the starter solenoid, located on top of the starter, and lower the old starter to the ground. 5 Transfer the support bracket on the back of the starter to the new starter and slip the starter into position. Install the cable and starter signal wire on the back of the starter and tighten them snugly using wrenches. 6 Slip the 15 mm starter bolts through the starter into the engine block and screw them in a few turns. Screw the support bracket bolts through the bracket into the engine and turn them a few turns. Tighten the starter bolts and bracket bolts securely. Reinstall the inspection cover around the front of the starter. 7 Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten the cable bolt securely. Raise the car off the stands and remove the stands. Lower the car to the ground. Start the engine to verify the repair is complete. Tips & Warnings Wear safety glasses and work gloves to prevent serious injuries Failure to support the vehicle weight with jack stands while working under it can result in vehicle damage and severe injury. Look also for certificates awarded to individual technicians who have completed factory-training programs that qualify them to operate specialized electronic equipment, and for grateful letters from satisfied customers. Better Business Bureau: Check with your local Better Business Bureau to see whether a shop has been the subject of numerous consumer complaints. Referrals: I've always felt that the best way to find a good mechanic is the same way you find a doctor, lawyer, or plumber — through referrals. Ask people who drive the same make vehicle as you do where they go for repairs, and then check out the shops that are the most conveniently located. As a fringe benefit, you'll also know which shops to avoid, because many of the people you ask will have horror stories to tell you, too. Evaluating a Facility 983

You should also ask what the hourly labor rate is and whether the shop uses OEM parts for your particular vehicle. A telephone interview can give you a good idea of whether a shop's prices are competitive and provide you with a feeling for the shop's "vibes." If the people you talk to are surly and uncommunicative over the phone, chances are that you're going to run into trouble if you have to deal with them in an emergency. Before you need service, follow up a positive phone interview with an unannounced visit to check on the following things: e* Is the place clean and well-organized or filthy and cluttered? Appearance is a good indication of general attitude. Auto repair is a trade that calls for patience and precision. If the shop is sloppy and disorganized, the work may be, too. *«* Does the shop have modern electronic diagnostic and testing equipment? These machines save time by pinpointing trouble areas and checking adjustments and tolerances. Saving time means saving money when it comes to paying those labor charges. Of course, this equipment is only as good as the person using it. Ask if shop technicians attend factory schools and seminars run by manufacturers to learn how to use the more sophisticated analyzers and keep up-to-date on new systems. Modern vehicles require sophisticated, specialized, diagnostic computer equipment, sometimes specific to the make and model of vehicle. Find out whether your vehicle is in that category. If it is, you may have to take it to your local dealer for any work involving computer-controlled functions. Part IV: Dealing with On-the-Road Emergencies Does the shop have a good, up-to-date service manual for your vehicle? I usually buy one for my car's year, make, and model and offer to lend it to the mechanic. After all, service facilities can't stock manuals for every vehicle in the world. Before you hand over your manual, scan the section that deals with the system in question. If you know which parts are involved and have at least a general idea of the work required, you'll be able to communicate intelligently with the service writer and have a basis for questioning any parts or labor charges that seem excessive. " Does the shop have the necessary tools to do your job? Ask whether any part of the job will have to be sent out to a specialist. If this is the case, ask whether they will simply pass those charges on to you, or mark them up to compensate themselves for the time and effort of delivering the vehicle to the specialist and picking it up afterward. If the entire job has to be done by an outside specialist, consider taking the vehicle there directly instead of having your shop serve as a middleman. Avoid conflicts with the service facility by saying that you want another estimate. Buick . Where in the trunk is the fuel cut off switch on a Lexus LS400?
Dodge Nitro. * * What form of payment does the shop accept? Credit cards? Checks? Or only cash? The advantage of using a credit card is that, in the event of a dispute, you can withhold payment until the credit card company investigates the situation. " How does the shop guarantee its repairs? Guarantees usually range from one month to a year. If a shop doesn't think that its work will endure for at least three months, go elsewhere. * Can the shop provide references? Most shops will allow you to call a few of its customers to see whether they were satisfied with service. A vehicle that you've paid thousands of dollars for is certainly worth the time it takes to get these assurances. How does the shop structure the price you pay for repairs? This not only has a great impact on your wallet, but on the quality of the work performed, as well. The following review of the advantages and disadvantages of various pricing systems is based on an article by automotive expert, David (Dre) Solomon, editor/publisher of Nutz & Boltz, an automotive newsletter. 0 By the clock: Any type of automotive repair facility may determine the cost of a job by multiplying a fixed hourly labor rate by the time it took to complete the work. • Advantages: This system is simple and easy to understand and encourages technicians to take the time to do their best work. Sometimes several basic services are combined into one package. • Advantages: Prices are easy to understand and are usually competitive.
